What is "Poor Man's Bacon"?

We often get many questions asking what exactly is "Poor Man's Bacon."

We are going to let you in on a little secret.

"Poor Man's Bacon" is one of the ultimate primal cuts in pork and is a staple in our home. Simply put, "Poor Man's Bacon" is pork jowl.

Pork jowl is some kind of delicious.

Preparing pork jowl is simple and requires a little bit of patience. The results are well worth the wait and time it takes to get the jowl crispy and full of flavor!

"Poor Man's Bacon"/Pork Jowl

  • Thaw out the jowl.
  • Heat a **cast iron skillet on the stove top on medium heat.
  • Once the skillet is hot, place the jowl in the skillet.
  • Sprinkle with sea salt since the jowl is uncured and unsalted.
  • Fry the jowl like you would bacon.
  • Make sure you fry it as long as it takes to get it to that golden brown and crispy stage.

One of our favorite meals to enjoy with pork jowl is a J.L.T. sandwich- Jowl, Lettuce, and Tomato on homemade bread.

Jowl can be used in any recipe that you would use bacon!

But, we LOVE eating it by itself too. It's that good!
