Dearest Farm Patrons,

We wanted to let you know about some exciting changes up ahead for Yonder Way Farm in hopes that you will share in our excitement with us.

Over the past 5 years, we've had the blessing and privilege to be able to farm on family land in Brenham, TX. Most people our age only dream of farming since obtaining land is typically out of reach. Our time in Brenham has equipped us and help shape us into who we've become as farmers and as a family.

If an analogy could be applicable here, we'd compare our time of farming in Brenham to being in “college”. We've been able to study, learn, grow, fail, and explore the world of farming in such a grace-filled and sweet way.

Through this whole endeavor, we've been blown away and in awe at the response from those in our community and surrounding areas who have chosen us to be their farmer. We've grown beyond our wildest dreams thanks to each of you and your faithful support.

This brings us to our exciting news! Yonder Way Farm is moving to Fayetteville, TX!

We've had the opportunity to transition from farming on family land in Brenham to our own 40 acre homestead complete with a farmhouse, barn, storefront, and a guest cottage in Fayetteville. We fell in love with this small, quaint, and rural community just 30 minutes south of Brenham. Fayetteville is near some of our most beloved places and in the midst of beautiful countryside.

We're in the middle of transitioning which includes packing and unpacking a family along with the animals, barns, store, and all of the other bits and pieces that help a farm run. Things will still go on with business as usual with our regularly scheduled deliveries. We're still waiting for more power on the new farm to get the storefront up and running here. The store will hopefully be ready at the new farm in Fayetteville for order pick up by the end of the week.

As you can imagine, these past few weeks have been crazy to the max. This is by far one of the most challenging things we've ever done logistically speaking. There have been many sleepless nights since chickens tend to roost at night and, therefore, must be moved at night.

But, we remain so grateful with the fondest of memories and experiences from the farm we are moving from. Yet, we press forward in hopeful expectation and excitement as we nest and settle in at our new farm in Fayetteville.

We look forward to continuing our vision of farming alongside the new community we now live in. Our passion will remain to operate in a transparent and sustainable way. We desire to be a hospitable farm by hosting events like “Open Farm Days”, “Dinner and a Movie”, and new events that are in the brainstorming phase. Fayette County is a gem that is full of culture, events, and attractions that continue to draw people and cause them to fall in love with “Small Town Texas” all over again.

As for the farm in Brenham- the farm will be placed on the market in just a few short weeks by our family who owns the property since they are relocating as well. If you've ever been out to the farm in Brenham, you have seen the beauty that lies within the rolling hills. There are 2 houses, swimming pool, barns, 2 ponds, a metal building, a covered working pin, a solar well, irrigated pastures, and 94 beautiful acres. If you would like more information on the Brenham farm, you can email DebraClick@esmartmed.info.

The animals seem to be liking their new home and we are settling in nicely to our 100+ year old farmhouse. There is still a lot of work to be done to revive this old farm and bring back to life what this land was originally used for. But, we are up for the challenge and couldn't be more excited about it.

We can't thank you enough for growing with us this far. As we plant deep roots in Fayette County, we look forward to seeing this next season of farming unfold and getting to know those of you who faithfully support our farm by choosing us to be your farmer. The reward lies within getting to put the food we raise directly into your hands.

Come and pay us a visit at our new farm in Fayetteville!! If you have any questions leave them in the comments section! We'll close with some photos of the new farm.

As a small farm we have to wait to see a consistent growth pattern before implementing an increase in production.

The GREAT news is that we've seen a consistent pattern, taken note of it, and are increasing our chicken production to meet this demand. We want to be able to supply ALL of your poultry needs.

We ask for patience with us as these chickens will not be ready for 2 months. We have them in the pastures foraging and doing what they do best, but they are only 4 weeks old.

We will continue to fill all of the orders on a first come first serve basis. We ask that you please continue ordering from us how you normally would.

The bluebonnets are in full bloom this year. This is a drastic difference from the bluebonnets not making an appearance last year due to the drought and not enough rain. We are enjoying them so much. The farm has lots of drivers that pull over on the side of the road to take photos of the chickens and pigs out in the bluebonnets.

The smell of clover is one of my favorite smells. When I think of Spring, this earthy fresh scent floods my memory. Clover abounds in the pastures and bluebonnets blanket the ground with vivid blue.

Reminders are everywhere within creation that Spring is indeed here. Spring is a time for a fresh start. In the world of farming you reflect on the past in hopes of implementing a vision for the future.

Here is some of the beauty that fills our pastures this time of year. Enjoy!

(Farmer Jason watching over a sow delivering a litter of piglets)

Every single animal on this farm is an important piece of the puzzle. We value every birth, every hatch, and every single life and how each life is lived out. This cycle is evident with each and every day that passes on a farm. You are constantly planning for the new to come in and the old to fulfill their purpose.

We take good animal husbandry very serious. We're watchful over the birth of piglets. We keep track of when a heffer calves. We are meticulous with hatching eggs because the process is all about timing to the temperature degree and the day.

The beauty of animal husbandry happens in the daily workings of a farm. Through the daily chores that take place, we are able to connect and come in close contact with every single animal on this farm. We take notice if an animal isn't acting quite right.
Seasons come, and seasons go

Next to God, that is something that will never change.

In life, there is always uncertainty and things that are unpredictable.

We are never called to have all the answers,

Or to be able to plan for every circumstance.

We are to have faith.

Faith that comes not from ourselves,

But from One who has called us His people.

Change is ever-present.

One year of drought, then 4 months of rain.

Sustainability at its finest.

I have no idea what tomorrow will hold.

Who does?

Prayer, trust, and a love for family.

Thankful to have my five chicks to live each day with.

Change is coming.

The smell is in the air.

I know the sun will rise in the East,

and set in the West.

How we take that for granted-

The consistency of some things.

When everyday, around us, change is happening.

Change.

It grows you, refines you, makes you think outside the box,

Keeps you strong, ever moving, not growing complacent.

We fear change,

But in reality, change is necessary.

No fear here.

Only gratefulness for the opportunities we have had where we were at.

What will the next change be.

I have no idea, nor can I perceive.

I know one thing, wherever my family, pigs, and chickens are,

There too, I shall be.

Looking forward, pressing on.

Perseverance.

The majority of eggs on our farm are fertile eggs because we have roosters with our layers. We have a pretty good amount of chicks that hatch because of this.

When we want to hatch eggs, we go gather a batch from out in the chicken coops and put them into our incubator.

Obviously mother hens have the absolute best hatching rate, but in order for us to hatch chicks the eggs must go into a controlled environment for 21 days. The eggs have to be turned and rotated twice a day. Most incubators will do this for you. The temperature has to be set between 99 and 102 degrees (100-101 degress is optimal). There has to be a bit of humidity in the incubators as well. We acheive this by placing a pan of water in the incubators or wet sponges.

You can 'candle' eggs to see if they are fertile or not. This is a really cool process! You basically look at the egg with a light source (flashlight works) in a dark room. If its a fertile egg, you can see an embryo forming that looks like a black dot at about 8 days into incubation. If its not a fertile egg, the egg will appear clear.

We stop turning the eggs about 2 to 3 days before they are supposed to hatch so that the chicks can start making 'pip' holes in the eggs and work their way out. The temperature will also stay about 100 to 101 degress. If you've never seen this process, it is a sight to witness and so fascinating watching the chicks work their way out. It's really hard not to want to help them get out of their shells, but them building up the strength and endurance to break out of them will help them survive once they make it out.

Once the eggs are done hatching, we'll move them into a different brooder box with wood shavings, food, and water. At this point, we'll try and keep the temp at about 95 degrees or so. They'll stay in an environment like this until they feather out and can withstand being outside. From that point they'll live the rest of their days out in the pasture with the other layers.

Hopefully they will earn their keep by laying beautiful and delicious eggs for all of our wonderful customers to enjoy!
